GRE : Analyze An Argument - 3

The following appeared as part of a letter to the editor of a scientific journal.
"A recent study of eighteen rhesus monkeys provides clues as to the effects of birth order on an individual's levels of stimulation. The study showed that in stimulating situations (such as an encounter with an unfamiliar monkey), firstborn infant monkeys produce up to twice as much of the hormone cortisol, which primes the body for increased activity levels, as do their younger siblings. Firstborn humans also produce relatively high levels of cortisol in stimulating situations (such as the return of a parent after an absence). The study also found that during pregnancy, first-time mother monkeys had higher levels of cortisol than did those who had had several offspring."
Write a response in which you discuss one or more alternative explanations that could rival the proposed explanation and explain how your explanation(s) can plausibly account for the facts presented in the argument.

GRE : Analyze An Argument - 2

Woven baskets characterized by a particular distinctive pattern have previously been found only in the immediate vicinity of the prehistoric village of Palea and therefore were believed to have been made only by the Palean people. Recently, however, archaeologists discovered such a "Palean" basket in Lithos, an ancient village across the Brim River from Palea. The Brim River is very deep and broad, and so the ancient Paleans could have crossed it only by boat, and no Palean boats have been found. Thus it follows that the so-called Palean baskets were not uniquely Palean.

Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.

GRE : Analyze An Argument - 1

In surveys Mason City residents rank water sports (swimming, boating and fishing) among their favorite recreational activities. The Mason River flowing through the city is rarely used for these pursuits, however, and the city park department devotes little of its budget to maintaining riverside recreational facilities. For years there have been complaints from residents about the quality of the river's water and the river's smell. In response, the state has recently announced plans to clean up Mason River. Use of the river for water sports is therefore sure to increase. The city government should for that reason devote more money in this year's budget to riverside recreational facilities.

Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on the assumptions and what the implications are if the assumptions prove unwarranted.

GRE : Analyze An Issue - 2

Analyze an Issue.
To understand the most important characteristics of a society, one must study its major cities.

Cities are integral part of a society, but in order to study characteristics of a region we have to bring other sub urban areas & villages within our purview of study. In the modern era, the cities are densely populated and major economical & political activities of a nation occur in cities. But we cannot ignore the fact the major part of the population of any nation resides in the non urban areas which act as a life sustaining systems for cities. Also the social life of major cities may be highly affected by other societies, for example impact of western cultures in eastern societies. Thus, the major cities may not reflect true nature of the society. In the medieval times some of the well known societies were known by their cities such as Rome & Athens, but those cities were also not self sufficient in every respect. Such cities usually depended on resources & labor force migrated from villages. In ancient times when man relied mainly on food gathering and hunting, there were no cities but we cannot refute the fact that they lived in a primitive form of society.

As people rely more and more on technology to solve problems, the ability of humans to think for themselves will surely deteriorate.

Technology has changed our lives by great extent within the span of 100 years. It's improving our way of living by providing various solutions of our problems and bring up new challenges to conquer. There is no doubt that the we are becoming more and more reliant on the use of technology, but whether the dependence is affecting our ability to think or perform is a hot topic for debate. Technology doesn't succeed mankind, it's dependent on us because it's a medium to make us more efficient and productive.
