Essay: Should women take her husbands' surname after marriage?

In Indian tradition & some of the western tradition, women take their husbands' surname after marriage. In India this practice is attached with the religious sentiments of the masses. It embeds the essence of succession of a clan while conserving its tradition & culture.

However alteration of surname of an individual is wholly a personal affair. It depends on the person is question how she would like to be called. It's a matter of individual freedom & it's a reserved right along with other rights of an individual.
In the western culture, change of surname of a women on account of marriage is taken on a matter of comfort & mutual understanding. Change of surname causes legal hassles as all the legal documents like driving licence , ID card etc should reflect the new surname of the person. Moreover the problem augments in cases like divorce. Divorced women may find herself in dilemma while judging her children's surname.
The Indian societal values are affected by the upsurge of western culture within eastern culture as many women are retaining their own surname or concatenating their husbands' surname as their second surname after marriage. These are sign of gender rights liberation within our society which is essential for imparting equal rights to both sexes. However it should not be forgotten that though the issue is a matter of individual freedom but the matter is  insignificant when contrasted with the essence of marriage.
