GRE : Analyze An Issue - 8

In any field of endeavor, it is impossible to make a significant contribution without first being strongly influenced by past achievements within that field.

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.

Response :

Usually, in any field of endeavor, an individual has to study the past achievements in order to contribute significantly in that field. For excelling in any field, one has to master the basics of that field. The basics of that field was invented by some individuals in past, had been passed from generation to generation and passed the test of time. But in case of some fields like music and arts, the artist has more freedom to create something new, independent of past achievements. In case of sciences, the correctness of acclaimed postulates or theory cannot be guaranteed, as in future, a contemporary theory may be proved wrong, due to the discovery of new information or knowledge which is not known to us at this point of time.
If we observe the works of most of the inventors, discoverer or writer, we will notice that though there work is unique, but it would have not been possible without expertise of the works of inventors, discovers or writers of the past. The works of the pioneers of the past acts as building blocks of the present endeavors. For excelling in physics, one has to understand Newton's Laws, similarly for every fields, one has to understand the basic principles and theories of the respective fields.
There are also some exceptions, some of the world famous inventors and discovers had created entirely new arenas for development. Discovery of atomic particles by Bohr led to development of new field called physical chemistry. Such pioneers had very little information or knowledge to begin with. Similar was the case for Newton who discovered three universal Newton's laws. But, the correctness of the theories or postulates invented by past pioneers cannot be assured. As the human civilizations progresses, new bulks of information and knowledge come into existence which may prove our past belief to be wrong. When Albert Einstein postulated 'The General Theory of Relativity', it was outrageous with respect to the classical laws of physics given by Newton. Initially, Einstein's postulate was not accepted by the scientific societies, but later experiments proved his theory to be correct.
Summarizing the argument, for succeeding in a particular field, one has to understand and master the past achievements and contribution, but everyone has the freedom to develop something new which can be fully independent of past achievements.  Even though, in some fields, one has more freedom from past achievements but still he or she has to depend on few chunks of information passed on by the past generations
