GRE : Analyze An Issue - 9

Nations should pass laws to preserve any remaining wilderness areas in their natural state, even if these areas could be developed for economic gain.

Write a response in which you discuss your views on the policy and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider the possible consequences of implementing the policy and explain how these consequences shape your position.

Response:

Deforestation is the major cause of environmental imbalance. The scenario is so bad, that some nations must pass laws to preserve any remaining wilderness areas in their natural state, even if these areas could be developed for economic gain. High industrialization leads to heavy pollution which cannot be managed when there is continuous reduction in wilderness.
Usually, the cause of deforestation is industrialization or building roads, and these causes further add to the pollution. In developed countries, urbanization is already done to great extent, and there is no urgent need for deforestation. In fact, these nations contribute a major share in global pollution. Due to heavy pollution, the natural balance is severely affected. There has been constant rise in global warming, and the climate, all round the world is changing drastically. The problem is further aggravated by the rapid rise in population. The only way to abate the severity of the problem is to preserve the remaining forests and to encourage afforestation.
Forest contribute to rain by the process called transpiration, they  also recycle the waste carbon dioxide by the process called photosynthesis.  Due to deforestation, the natural balance is affected badly causing drastic changes in temperatures and climate patterns.
There are many species of flora and fauna, gone extinct due to large scale deforestation, as their natural inhabitants are destroyed. In certain situations, wild species have to resort to urban areas in search of food which creates problem for the urban inhabitants and affects the natural food chain. By preserving the remaining wilderness, at least the remaining species will be saved. Deforestation can be stopped by passing strict laws to preserve the forests and wildlife. Some countries have already carried out such laws to preserve the natural surroundings.
In some under-developed countries, where there is abundance of forests, minute scale deforestation can be managed, as such countries are way behind in economic prosperity as compared to other nations. Such countries need economic growth through industrialization and urbanization for solving problems like poverty. But, due to the global affect of the problem, every act of deforestation should be counter balanced by afforestation in other areas; this should be the main concern of the under-developed nations, if they resort to deforestation.
Summarizing the topic, large scale deforestation done in the past had severely damaged our planet. The nations which have achieved a good level of economic growth should stop further deforestation and pass stringent laws and measures to stop further damage, while encouraging afforestation. Nations having adverse economic condition and abundance of forest coverage can manage minute deforestation, but such acts must be counter balanced by afforestation.
