India as a UNSC Permanent Member : Far-fetched or Certain

India’s bid for UNSC permanent membership is justified as it plays one the most important role in world arena in the social, political & economical spheres.  The acceptance of India in UNSC depends on the consent of permanent members of UNSC who have varied opinions about it. Moreover , there are other countries namely Japan, Germany & Brazil along with India, collectively called G4, who are also claiming for permanent seat at UNSC. Along with internal & political huddles in UNSC reforms, the expansion of UNSC faces stern opposition from the rivals of candidates for permanent seat in their own regions.

India is the world’s largest liberal democracy. It has 2nd largest population in the world. It is also the world's eleventh largest economy and fourth largest in terms of purchasing power parity. Currently, India maintains the world's third largest active armed force and possesses nuclear weapons. These figures evidently supports India’s bid for UNSC permanent seat. Moreover, India is the third largest contributor of troops to United Nations Peacekeeping missions and has been elected to the council as a non-permanent UNSC member seven times for a period of 2 years, with the most recent successful bid being in 2010.

The veto power of permanent members is considered as a major problem in UN reformation. By wielding the veto power, a member can prevents endorsement of a resolution. Four of the permanent members, US, Russia, France & UK, endorsed the India’s bid. Each of these state's head have supported & welcomed UNSC reformation in their recent itinerary to India. China’s motive is not yet clear who is usually involved in political & ideology conflicts with India. India’s natural enemy, Pakistan strongly opposes India’s bid along with other states who opposes the expansion of UNSC to accommodate G4. The path of the UNSC reformation is difficult but it will also be difficult to ignore India who is growing by leaps & bounds.
